Lets talk about Strom Thurmond

We heard about Ruth Bader Ginsberg and her recent short comings so now lets be fair and see the other side of the coin.

Strom Thurmond, born James Strom Thurmond, served in office for 48 years partially as a Democrat and ended his career as a Republican. He passed away while still in office at the age of 100.

What I do not like about his legacy is the fact that later in life he was voting strictly party and not even knowing what he was voting on, for or about. He would fall asleep in the chamber in his chair and was being awakened by the senators that were more or less babysitting him and told it was time for him to vote. He would ask those senators how he was supposed to vote, yay or nay. The man did not know what he was voting on or for, just voting the way he was told.

Even though I was a registered Republican but still moderate at the time this appalled me. This is just one of the many reasons that eventually I went back to being a Democrat. The Republicans kept him going because he was a sure vote their way.

As far as Ruth Ginsberg goes she is serving a lifetime appointment and it is totally up to her and her Constitutional right to serve for as long as she chooses. She did not make that law but it was already determined before she took office.

Personally I do feel that justices, senators and house representatives should have an age limit for their term in office. There comes a point where they are just too old to make sound decisions on their own and this goes for Democrats and Republicans both.

I do feel that all justices should be moderate, rather Republican or Democrat so they can examine both sides of an issue instead of just voting along party lines. This may be one of the reasons why Ruth Ginsberg stays in office to try to keep the balance of power more equal.

Strom Thurmond could have retired with dignity and honor also before he passed away while still in office.

I tried to find more pics of the senator but just about everything I found had a copyright through the middle of it.

I do not know if Thurmond was a good or bad senator but it was reported that he did have ties to the KKK. My complaint is that he should not have been voting on issues if he did not know what he was voting on, for or against. And at the time I heard this info, I was a Republican at the time.

trump will only appoint conservative Republicans which will vote on party lines.

Thanks for your input.

When it comes to RBG it's high time They prop hr up and she makes a public showing. The SCUTUS position is more than a part time job to be filled by flunkies. There is the 25th Amendment to cover POTUS we need to expand it to SCOTUS too.

You calling Ginsberg a flunky? She has achieved as much or more in her life than some of the other justices and also most of her her critics. Right now I would rather have her sit right where she is at. What's wrong with really being fair and balanced.

The SCOTUS should follow the law not make it.

Our country is more divided now than I can ever remember. It is either hard right or hard left that is why I feel we need more moderates on both sides.

That is why I always try to look at both sides of an issue
