Latest Acquisition When the mailman comes I never know quite what to expect a bill, legal notice, or a coin purchased for our collection. Saint Helena was where Napoleon was imprisoned by the British. This 1/2 penny and another token were struck for use by the garrison stationed on the island to guard him. Unfortunately for them, Napoleon died in 1821, the same year that the tokens were issued and the garrison disbanded. A low mintage of 71,000 keeps this coin out of most collectors cabinet. Named after Saint Helena of Constantinople the island measures about 10 by 5 miles and has a population of 4,534 (2016 census). |
