Color My World

hundred Thirty ago cousins Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith, formed Binney & Smith on April 25, 1885. The cousins made shoe polish and printing ink, and in 100 began making slate pencils. They mixed ments and paraffin wax to create a crayon that was used to mark crates and barrels. These crayons were too toxic for , and they began researching what materials they could use that would be safe.

They were able to adapt the crayons using safe ments, and in doing so made the first crayons for . The first box was sold in 103; it had crayons and cost a nickel. Alice Stead Binney, Edwin's wife, came up with the name Crayola, by blending the French words for chalk and oily—craie and oleaginous. Many colors from the early are no longer in production. Over 750 color names have been used over the , representing more than 330 colors. Crayola has made many types of crayons, including color-changing, glitter, and glow in the dark varieties.

. If interested in knowing more about how crayons are made , watch the video of Mr. Rogers showing how crayons were made in 181.

Crayola crayons. The very first item on every student's school supply list. We were only allowed one box a year, so had to really ration the use of them. I think a box was two bits when I was in elementary school.

Happy Crayola Day!

I have no idea what they cost, being covered by my parents but I treated them as if they were sacred relics cautiously used and never desecrated.

They do a good job at presenting a useful, valuable product to expand the minds of both young and old alike.
