40 Years Ago Karol Józef Wojtyła, the Archbishop of Kraków, won the papal elections on October 16, 1978. The first Non-Italian to Win the Papacy since 1523 The papal conclaves were held after his predecessor Pope John Paul I died after only 33 days in office. As Pope, Wojtyła took on the name of John Paul II. He was the second-longest serving pope in modern history, after Pope Pius IX, who was in office for over 31 years. |

Posthumously, he has been referred to by some Catholics as "John Paul the Great", although the title has no official recognition.

John Paul II was proclaimed Venerable by his successor Pope Benedict XVI and was beatified on 1 May 2011
